We are the Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus, a dynamic women's acapella chorus! Join us Thursday nights at the Marion Gerrish Community Center in Derry, New Hampshire. We promise you an evening of fun, laughter, encouragement and of course wonderful acapella 4 part harmony.
It doesn't get any better!
Here is some information that we hope will answer some of your questions.
What part do I sing?
If you have never sung four-part harmony, barbershop style, you probably want to know what's so special about picking a part. Unlike the traditional parts called soprano and alto, our singing parts have different names and thus different roles:
LEADLeads sing the melody line most of the time.
They sing with authority. The lead section determines the chorus' personality.
TENORTenors sing harmony, usually above the leads.
BARITONEBaritones sing harmony, sometimes above and sometimes below the lead and is said to be the “glue” between the lead and bass parts.
BASSBasses sing a low, full harmony part that rounds out the barbershop sound.
Each new guest will spend a few minutes with Jessie Samuel, our director, or Louise Cullen or Karen Hagan, one of our assistant directors, who will have you sing some scales to determine the most comfortable voice part. This is not an audition, just a way to make sure you start off in the appropriate section. After you have tried one part, if you would like to try a different one, please speak with our director.

Sweet Adelines International
Rhythm of New Hampshire Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, one of the world's largest singing and music education organizations for women. Choruses like ours are located all over the USA, Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Japan, Sweden, New Zealand, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, and we continue to expand to other countries. The organization is divided into 30 regions. We belong to the North Atlantic Region (Region #1), which includes New England, Eastern New York and Eastern Canada.
Region #1 holds an annual competition in April or May in which the choruses and registered quartets of the region compete. This is a wonderful experience and all the preparation that goes into our competition package helps us improve our vocal and performing skills overall. We are currently preparing for our first regional competition. Once a chorus is chartered, they may choose to compete in regional competition every year, every other year, or just once every three years which is what you must do to keep your chorus charter. In Region #1, competition will be held in Springfield, MA. The winning chorus and quartet go on to compete in International which is held each year in a different location.
Opportunities for Personal Growth!
In addition to our main mission, singing very well, the chorus offers fun, friendship and many opportunities to learn and grow. You can increase your knowledge about costuming, choreography and makeup. We'll even show you how to produce and stage a show or be an emcee. Are you interested in administration, finance, public relations or marketing? Perhaps you will want to become a member of the chapter board of directors. Our International and Regional organizations hold seminars and symposiums offering classes in many of these areas and our members are eligible to go to each year. There are many ways to get involved and there is variety enough for everyone's tastes. You may participate at your own level of enthusiasm and availability.
